KIDS & PETS

The two constants often found in the American home are kids and/or pets. Beyond the rectangular play area and the fenced dog run, designing gardens and landscapes that accommodate the unique needs of kids and pets is increasingly requested. Both are very important parts of our lives, both have very different needs. Wherever children are present, safety is of utmost importance and consideration, especially when pools and ponds are in the yard. Fire pits, outdoor cooking centers, high steps and walls, sharp corners, and poisonous plants are danger zones for kids. Kids start walking fairly straight at 18 months, and on the run from that point on, and always growing so the garden must evolve as family and children grow. A garden designed with children in mind feels safe, comfortable, and exciting to a child. Scale, texture, and visual beauty are significant discoveries to a child. The feel of soft textured fuzzy plants, brilliant multi-colored flowers, butterflies and birds flying in the air are special moments in the garden for a child. Scooter and bike pathways, obstacle tracks, and slides/play sets encourage movement and exercise.

Dogs and cats are lovable creatures; of the two, dogs in particular, are adapted to being outdoors. Any outdoor dog must have shelter during the course of the day and have access to indoors during extreme weather. Dog behavior and needs vary based on the breed and size of the dog, but for sure you can count on a new puppy destroying your landscaping if not enclosed in a comfortable location when alone. One thing kids and pets have in common is that they tend to experiment by chewing and eating plants and materials, so it’s important to get the correct advice from experienced professionals. Let us design a safe and friendly environment for your cherished kids and furry family members.
